The Advantages of Forging Metal

The history of metal forging is in many ways the history of human civilization. As humanity attempted to shape the natural world to its needs, the development of metal forging was essential. Entire periods of civilization are categorized by developments in metallurgy, such as the Bronze Age and Iron Age. The 19th and 20th centuries might one day be included in a Steel Age. Forging metal provides numerous advantages essential to modern civilization.
Strength
Metallurgy is probably the oldest of the applied sciences. Since well before recorded history, humans have been using forging to create stronger metals than the ones that are naturally found in the ground. The discovery of steel was probably a necessary step toward the industrial revolution. Only by super-heating iron in a forge is the purer compound of steel created. Today steel and other strong metals created from forging underlie most large construction.
Design
Through the use of a forge to melt metal down to liquid, it is possible to create metal objects in any shape imaginable. This intention is probably what led to the first uses of metal forging, as people created jewelry and other decorative objects out of gold and other attractive metals. This is still a major benefit of forging metal that is taken advantage of today as metal decoration is used all over.
Cost
Due to the techniques first developed during the Industrial Revolution, the art of metal forging now allows the cheap mass production of metals that once were extremely rare and expensive. Steel was known from as early as the 11th century BC. It was only with the development of the Bessemer process in the 19th century that a way to produce it cheaply and in large amounts allowed it to be used in construction that undergirds modernity.

Flange Types

There are seven standard types of flanges used for connecting pipes, valves, pumps and other parts of a pipe system: weld neck, slip-on, blind, socket weld, threaded, lap joint and ring type joint. For ease of comprehension, these flanges are divided into three categories: low turbulence, low pressure and other; however, these categories are not binding, as certain types of flanges may be adjusted for different applications.
Definition
A flange is a plate type device, normally round, that is attached to the end of a pipe, fitting, valve or other object to facilitate the assembly and disassembly of a piping system, providing easy access for cleaning, inspecting or modification. Flanges are usually welded or screwed in place, and all types except the lap joint have a raised face equal to the contact area of the associated gasket.
Low Turbulence Flanges
A weld neck flange is welded into the neck of the pipe system, matching the bores of both pipe and flange, which reduces turbulence and erosion inside the system. A socket weld flange is counter-bored to match the bore of the pipe before being welded in place; like a weld neck flange, the socket weld flange reduces turbulence and provides good flow characteristics.
Low Pressure System Flanges
Threaded flanges (also known as "screwed" flanges) are used in low-pressure pipe systems to connect other threaded components; no welding is necessary. Lap joint flanges are also used in low pressure pipe systems; they are easy to assemble and align and are the only type of flange that doesn't have a raised face.
Other Types
A slip-on flange is slipped over the pipe and then welded in place; the strength of a slip-on flange is about two thirds that of a weld neck flange. A blind flange (sometimes referred to as "blanking flange") is used to close off ("blank off") pipes or valves. Ring type joint flanges use a metal ring that is compressed into a hexagonal groove on the face of the flange, ensuring a leak-proof seal in high pressure pipe systems.
Subcategorization by Face Type
Flanges may be subcategorized by different face types: flat face, raised face, ring-type joint, tongue and groove and male and female.

Pipe Flange Information

Pipe flanges are American National Standards Institute (ANSI) rated for pressure y, corrosion resistance and maximum strength. Whenever installing flanges, either cast flanges (part of pipes or tubes) or ring flanges (slid onto to pipe or tube collars), always make sure the line's pressure will carry and what will will contain. Stainless steel will work well with water or steam but can wear away quickly if subjected to caustic slurry or chemical process.
      Cast Flange
Cast flanges are part of the line section and are aligned to connect quickly to another flanged section. These flanges are strong and resistant to pressure. The disadvantage to a cast flange is if flange must be disassembled or replaced the entire length of line must also.
      Ring Flange
Ring flanges are separate parts from the line. The line has a flared end and the flange rings around the flared end to seal it tight when connected to another flange. The advantage is the ring flange allows for different diameters of line to attach using the flange as a reducer. The flange is also easily replaceable without replacing the entire section, an important quality with caustic and corrosive media. The disadvantage is the ring flange/flare connection may not be as resistant to high-pressure media in the line.
      Gaskets
Flange installation uses gasket material placed between each flange connection. Gasket material is also ANSI rated and different gaskets are needed for containing and handling different media. In most instances if a leak or failure occurs at the flange-to-flange fitting, the gasket can be considered the prime source for the malfunction. Replacing gaskets connected to either type of fitting involves the same procedure and does not necessarily involve replacing the flanges or the line.
      Installation
Installing flanges is a basic mechanical job: insert the gasket material, align the flange bolt holes and secures with the necessary number of bolts. Always bolt every hole. Don't assume leaving one or two disconnected will satisfactory seal the connection. Also, use a criss-cross pattern to tightening the bolts: tighten the bolt on top then the one at the bottom, to the left and then the right. Repeat this around the flange's circumference. This bolting procedure will apply pressure to the gasket and the facing flanges evenly and result in a complete seal. Just bolting around the circle can lead to crimping and poor alignment of the last remaining bolts.
      Fastener
Always use fasteners specified for the flange fitting. Using fasteners made of the wrong material. As an example, galvanized bolts with stainless steel flanges can lead to galvanic corrosion. Using bolts too small for the flange can allow the flange to move. Bolts too short may lead to insufficient threading and the flanges will not be secure.

Pipe Welding Made Easy

Pipe fitting and welding is a very common activity for welders, and requires different
techniques and a higher skill level than standard flat welds. Many pipes require welds
to be performed overhead or in tight confines, and the welder has to maintain a
consistent bead while continuously moving the equipment around the pipe.
Pipe Welding Preparation
Before the pipes can be fit up and welded, the welder has to prepare the ends of the
pipes. The standard configuration for pipe welding is a single-vee butt weld. In this
case, the outer edge of the pipe is beveled so that when the edges of the pipe are
brought together, they form a vee-shaped groove that will contain the weld. The edges
of the pipe can be beveled using a torch cutter and cleaned up by grinding, or by using
a pipe cutting machine. In some cases, the pipes may be pre-beveled as part of the
manufacturing process. The pipe edges are then cleaned and de-greased to remove
contaminants from the surface that could adversely affect the weld.
Fitting Up Pipes for Welding
After preparing the pipes, the welder arranges the pipes in the location where they
will be installed in a process called "fitting up". This ensures that all of the pipes
are aligned properly before any of the welds are created. To do this, the welder will
tack weld individual joints and verify alignment of each joint until each joint has
about four tack welds. The tack welds provide stability plus a bit of flexibility in
the assembly so that parts can be adjusted as needed.
Pipe Welding Procedures
There are two general procedures for welding pipes in a horizontal position: uphill
welding and downhill welding. Uphill pipe welding is a technique most applicable to
thick walled pipes that can retain heat. The weld begins at the lowest point of the
pipe the welder builds the bead up one side of the pipe to the top of the pipe. The
welder then repeats this process on the other side of the pipe, starting the weld at
the lowest point and moving the bead upwards.
Downhill pipe welding is performed on thin walled pipes that can dissipate heat
quickly. In this case, the welder will start the weld at the top of the pipe and work
the bead down to the lowest point of the pipe, repeating the process on the other side.
Other than orientation, the general welding procedure is no different than flat
welding, and will depend on the type of welding and the material of the pipes.

What is the flange?

Flange pipe (flanged pipe fittings) that with a flange (flange or access plate) of the tube. It is made by casting, but may also constitute a threaded connection or welding. Flange (flange, joint) by a pair of flanges, a gasket, and the composition of a number of bolts nuts. Gasket on the sealing surface between the two flanges, tighten the nut, the gasket surface pressure reaches a certain value than the post-deformation, and to fill the sealing surface uneven Department, so that does not leak tight connection. Detachable flange connection is a connection. By the connected components can be divided into the container flange and pipe flanges. Divided by structure type, have an overall flange, loose flanges and threaded flange. Common integral flange with flat flange and butt welding flange. Less rigid flat welding flange for the pressure p ≤ 4MPa occasions; welded flange, also known as high-neck flange, more rigid, higher temperature for pressure situations. Flange sealing surface, there are three types: planar sealing surface for the pressure is not high, medium non-toxic occasions; uneven sealing surface for the higher pressure situations; tongue and groove sealing surface, suitable for flammable and explosive , toxic medium and high pressure situations. Gasket is to produce plastic deformation, and has a certain intensity of the ring material. Most pads are cut off from the metal plate, or by a professional factory producing the required size, the material is asbestos rubber sheet, asbestos sheet, polyethylene sheet, etc.; also useful for sheet metal (white metal, stainless steel) to asbestos made of non-metallic materials such as metal pack wrapped gasket; there is a thin strip along with the asbestos with a winding made of spiral wound gaskets. Ordinary rubber gasket suitable for temperature below 120 ℃ occasions; asbestos rubber gasket applied to the steam temperature is below 450 ℃, on the oil temperature below 350 ℃, pressure of less than 5MPa occasions, for general corrosion medium, the most commonly used is the acid asbestos. In the high-pressure equipment and piping in copper, aluminum, 10 steel, stainless steel and the lens or other forms of metal gasket. High-pressure gasket and sealing surface of the contact width is very narrow (line contact), with the gasket sealing surface finish higher processing. Low voltage and small diameter wire connected flange, high pressure and low pressure large-diameter welded flanges are used, different pressure flange thickness and bolt diameter and number of connections is different.

Heat Treating Stainless Steels

Heat Treating Stainless Steels
Wrought stainless steels are solution annealed after processing and hot worked in order to dissolve carbides and sigma. Carbides may form during heating in the 425 to 900C (800 to 1650F) range or during slow cooling through this range. Sigma tends to form at temperatures below 925C (1700F). Specifications normally require solution annealing to be done at 1035C (1900F) with a rapid quench. The molybdenum-containing grades are frequently solution annealed at somewhat higher temperatures in the 1095 to 1120C (2000 to 2050F) in order to better homogenize the molybdenum.
Stainless steels may be stress relieved. There are several stress relief treatments. Guidelines follow.
Stress redistribution at 290 to 425C (550 to 800F), which is below the sensitization range.
When stainless steel sheet and bar are cold reduced greater than about 30% and subsequently heated to 290 - 425C (550 - 800F), there is a significant redistribution of peak stresses and an increase in both tensile and yield strength. Stress redistribution heat treatments at 290 - 425C (550 - 800F) will reduce movement in later machining operations and are occasionally used to increase strength. Since stress redistribution treatments are made at temperatures below 425C (800F), carbide precipitation and sensitization to intergranular attack (IGA) are not a problem for the higher carbon grades.
Stress relief at 425 to 595C (800 to 1100F) is normally adequate to minimize distortion that would otherwise exceed dimensional tolerances after machining. Only the low carbon "L" grades or the stabilized 321 and 347 grades should be used in weldments to be stress relieved above 425C (800F) as the higher carbon grades are sensitized to IGA when heated above about 425C (800F).
Stress relief at 815 to 870C (1500 to 1600F) is occasionally needed when a fully stress relieved assembly is required. Only the low carbon "L" grades, 321 and 347 should be used in assemblies to be heat treated in this range. Even though the low carbon and stabilized grades are used, it is best to test for susceptibility to IGA per ASTM A262 to be certain there was no sensitization during stress relief treating in this temperature range.
Thermal stabilization treatments at 900C (1650F) minimum for 1 to 10 hours are occasionally employed for assemblies that are to be used in the 400 to 900C (750 to 1650F) temperature range. Thermal stabilization is intended to agglomerate the carbides, thereby preventing further precipitation and intergranular attack (IGA). As with 815 to 870C (1500 to 1600F) stress relief, it is best to test for susceptibility to IGA per ASTM A262.

Categories of Stainless Steels

Categories of Stainless Steels
I. Austenitic - A family of alloys containing chromium and nickel (and manganese and nitrogen when nickel levels are reduced), generally built around the type 302 chemistry of 18% Cr, 8% Ni, and balance mostly Fe. These alloys are not hardenable by heat treatment.

II. Ferritic - This group of alloys generally containing only chromium, with the balance mostly Fe, are based upon the type 430 composition of 17% Cr. These alloys are somewhat less ductile than the austenitic types and again are not hardenable by heat treatment.

III. Martensitic - The members of this family of stainless steels may be hardened and tempered just like alloy steels. Their basic building block is type 410 which consists of 12% Cr, 0.12% C, and balance mostly Fe.

IV. Precipitation-Hardening - These alloys generally contain Cr and less than 8% Ni, with other elements in small amounts. As the name implies, they are hardenable by heat treatment.

V. Duplex - This is a stainless steel alloy group, or family, with two distinct microstructure phases -- ferrite and austenite. The Duplex alloys have greater resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and higher strength than the other austenitic or ferritic grades.

VI. Cast - The cast stainless steels, in general, are similar to the equivalent wrought alloys. Most of the cast alloys are direct derivatives of one of the wrought grades, as C-8 is the cast equivalent of wrought type 304. The C preceding a designation means that the alloy is primarily used for resistance to liquid corrosion. An H designation indicates high temperature applications.
